Au fil du temps, le compositeur belge Harold Noben (*1978) s\u2019est forg\u00e9 un langage qui lui est propre. Se refusant \u00e0 tout cadre d\u00e9termin\u00e9, sa musique ne se revendique d\u2019aucune attache, mais brasse plut\u00f4t des styles et des courants vari\u00e9s jusqu\u2019\u00e0 en faire son propre kal\u00e9idoscope sonore dot\u00e9 d\u2019une palette iris\u00e9e, personnelle et libre. Souvent impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e de litt\u00e9rature, sa musique est \u00e9galement d\u00e9crite comme porteuse d\u2019une puissance \u00e9vocatrice et narrative.<\/p>

Cet \u00e9clectisme est n\u00e9 d\u2019un parcours atypique, et autodidacte en ce qui concerne la composition, qui s\u2019est construit pas \u00e0 pas. Form\u00e9 tout d\u2019abord au Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Li\u00e8ge<\/strong> o\u00f9 il obtient notamment un dipl\u00f4me sup\u00e9rieur de piano aupr\u00e8s de Jean Schils<\/strong> et Marie-Paule Cornia<\/strong>, il se tourne ensuite vers la composition en fondant son trio Cardamome<\/strong>, \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e du jazz et du classique en passant par des touches inspir\u00e9es du tango nuevo et de musiques traditionnelles. Il \u00e9crit \u00e9galement pour quelques courts-m\u00e9trages et documentaires<\/p>

Sous l\u2019impulsion de S\u00e9bastien Walnier<\/strong> qui lui commande une premi\u00e8re oeuvre pour l\u2019ensemble \u00d4-Celli<\/strong> en 2011, il va b\u00e2tir sa route singuli\u00e8re de compositeur et collaborer avec des ensembles et institutions prestigieuses.<\/p>

Collaboration avec les 12 violoncellistes du Berliner Philharmoniker<\/strong> sur leur album \u00ab\u00a0Hora Cero\u00a0\u00bb autour de Piazzolla (Sony, 2016), commande de l\u2019Orchestre Philharmonique de Li\u00e8ge\u00a0<\/strong> en 2018\u00a0 avec \u00ab\u00a0White House 1921\u00a0\u00bb dirig\u00e9 par Christian Arming<\/strong>, il sera en r\u00e9sidence de composition de 2018 \u00e0 2020 \u00e0 la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth<\/strong> sous la supervision de Beno\u00eet Mernier<\/strong>.<\/p>

Celle-ci aboutira \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de son op\u00e9ra de chambre \u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 l\u2019extr\u00eame bord du monde\u00a0\u00bb autour de la fin tragique de Stefan Zweig et de son \u00e9pouse Lotte, sur la sc\u00e8ne de la Monnaie<\/strong> en octobre 2020 et repris en 2026 lors des Concertini.<\/p>

Sa collaboration avec la Monnaie continuera alors avec \u00ab\u00a0Beyond\u00a0\u00bb, concerto pour Orchestre command\u00e9 par Peter de Caluwe<\/strong> et cr\u00e9\u00e9 en 2022 sous la direction d\u2019Alain Altinoglu<\/strong> ainsi que, tout r\u00e9cemment, son op\u00e9ra \u00ab\u00a0Bovary<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb, sur un livret de Micha\u00ebl De Cock<\/strong>, cr\u00e9\u00e9 au Th\u00e9\u00e2tre National en avril 2025 sous la direction de D\u00e9bora Waldman<\/strong>.<\/p>

Pour la session d\u00e9di\u00e9e au violoncelle en 2026, le Concours Musical International Reine Elisabeth<\/strong> lui commande une oeuvre pour violoncelle et piano qui sera l’impos\u00e9 des demi-finales du concours. La cr\u00e9ation de son oeuvre\u00a0Caffeine<\/em><\/strong> aura lieu le 11 mai 2026 et se verra interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e par les 24 artistes arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 ce stade du concours.<\/p>

Dans le r\u00e9pertoire de la musique de chambre, des commandes lui viennent de nombreux ensembles, artistes et institutions tels que Musiques Nouvelles, Sturm und Klang, le Quatuor Am\u00f4n, La Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, Elsa de Lacerda, Pierre Solot, Roeland Hendrikx ensemble, Amia Janicki, Lisa Willems, ou encore \u00d4-Celli, dont les oeuvres compos\u00e9es sp\u00e9cialement pour eux sont jou\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019international (France, Lettonie, Canada,\u2026).\u00a0<\/p>

Il a obtenu le prix Marcel Hastir<\/strong> en 2022 pour son quatuor \u00e0 cordes \u00ab\u00a0Quartet from the Portuguese\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0 inspir\u00e9 des \u00ab\u00a0Sonnets from the Portuguese\u00a0\u00bb d\u2019Elisabeth Barrett Browning ainsi que le prix de la composition de la Fondation des Treilles<\/strong> en 2024. Il a d\u00e8s lors pu b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier d\u2019une r\u00e9sidence de trois mois au sein de la Fondation pour se consacrer pleinement \u00e0 la composition de \u00ab\u00a0Bovary<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>

Over time, the Belgian composer Harold Noben (*1978) has developed a personal musical language. Refusing to adhere to any predetermined framework, his music claims no allegiance but rather blends diverse styles and currents, forging his own sonic kaleidoscope with a unique, iridescent, and free palette. Often imbued with literature, his music is also described as possessing evocative and narrative power.<\/p>

This eclecticism stems from an atypical, self-taught compositional path built step by step. Initially trained at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Li\u00e8ge<\/strong>, where he notably earned a higher diploma in piano under Jean Schils<\/strong> and Marie-Paule Cornia<\/strong>, he later turned to composition by founding his trio Cardamome<\/strong>, situated at the crossroads of jazz and classical music, with touches inspired by nuevo tango and traditional musics. He also composed for several short films and documentaries.<\/p>

Encouraged by S\u00e9bastien Walnier<\/strong>, who commissioned his first work for the ensemble \u00d4-Celli in 2011, he began forging his unique path as a composer and collaborated with prestigious ensembles and institutions.<\/p>

Collaboration with the 12 cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker<\/strong> on their album \u201cHora Cero\u201d centered on Piazzolla (Sony, 2016), commission from the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Li\u00e8ge<\/strong> in 2018 with \u201cWhite House 1921\u201d conducted by Christian Arming<\/strong>, he held a composition residency from 2018 to 2020 at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel<\/strong> under the supervision of Beno\u00eet Mernier<\/strong>.<\/p>

This culminated in the creation of his chamber opera \u201c\u00c0 l\u2019extr\u00eame bord du monde,\u201d centered on the tragic end of Stefan Zweig and his wife Lotte, staged at La Monnaie in October 2020 and reprised in 2026 during the Concertini.<\/p>

His collaboration with La Monnaie continued with \u201cBeyond,\u201d a concerto for orchestra commissioned by Peter de Caluwe<\/strong> and premiered in 2022 under the direction of Alain Altinoglu<\/strong>, as well as, most recently, his opera \u201cBovary,\u201d with a libretto by Micha\u00ebl De Cock<\/strong>, premiered at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre National in April 2025 under the direction of D\u00e9bora Waldman<\/strong>.<\/p>

For the session dedicated to the cello in 2026, the Queen Elisabeth International Musical Competition<\/strong> commissioned a work for cello and piano which will be the obligatory entry in the semi-finals of the competition. His work Caffeine<\/strong><\/em> will be premiered on May 11, 2026 and will be performed by the 24 artists who have reached this stage of the competition.<\/p>

In the chamber music repertoire, commissions have come from numerous ensembles, artists, and institutions such as Musiques Nouvelles, Sturm und Klang, the Am\u00f4n Quartet, La Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, Elsa de Lacerda, Pierre Solot, the Roeland Hendrikx ensemble, Amia Janicki, Lisa Willems, and \u00d4-Celli, whose specifically composed works are performed internationally (France, Latvia, Canada, etc.).<\/p>

He received the Marcel Hastir Prize<\/strong> in 2022 for his string quartet \u201cQuartet from the Portuguese,\u201d inspired by Elizabeth Barrett Browning\u2019s \u201cSonnets from the Portuguese,\u201d and the composition prize from the Fondation des Treilles<\/strong> in 2024. He thus benefited from a three-month residency at the Foundation to fully dedicate himself to composing \u201cBovary.\u201d<\/p>

Additionally, Harold Noben is a professor at IMEP<\/strong> in Namur and at the Arthur De Greef<\/strong> Academy<\/strong> in Saint-Gilles.
